This section explains how to create and configure projects in KnowCount. Projects are used as planning tools to define roles, assign skill requirements, and allocate people based on their capacity and capabilities. They are not used for execution tracking such as time, tasks, or budgets.
1. What Projects Are For
Projects in KnowCount help you:
Define the roles needed for success
Specify the skill levels required for each role
Allocate people based on availability and skill match
Set up a foundation for skill gap analysis and project readiness evaluation (covered in a later section)
2. Creating a Project
To create a new project:
Go to the Projects section.
Click Create new project.
Enter the following required information:
Project name
Start date
End date
Description
Project Manager (must be an existing user in KnowCount)
Click Save to create the project.
๐ Project details can be fully edited later โ including dates, roles, and assignments โ without restrictions.
3. Define Project Roles
After the project is created, define the roles needed to complete the project:
In the project workspace, go to the Roles tab.
Click Add role.
Choose an existing Role from your organization (e.g., โUX Designer,โ โQA Analystโ).
Assign the skills and target skill levels required for this role.
You can reuse an existing role definition or customize skills for this specific project.
Click Save.
๐ Only skill levels are required โ interest levels are not part of project skill targeting.
4. Assign People to Roles
To allocate people to the project:
Go to the People tab within the project.
Click Assign person to role.
Select the person you wish to assign (must already exist in KnowCount).
Select the role you are assigning them to.
Set the percentage allocation (e.g., 25%, 50%, 100%).
Click Assign.
You can repeat this process to:
Assign the same person to multiple roles in the same project
Allocate people from multiple teams
Assign people from a team to multiple projects
This allows flexible modeling of shared resources across multiple initiatives.
5. Editing a Project
To modify an existing project:
Navigate to the Projects section and select the project.
Click the Edit button.
You can change:
Project name, dates, description
Project manager
Add or remove roles
Adjust skill targets
Reassign or reallocate people
Click Save to apply changes.
There are no restrictions on editing โ all parts of the project can be adjusted as needs evolve.
